Roblox
New tiered Kids (5–8) and Select (9–15) accounts with restricted chat and AI age verification. A West Virginia grooming case charged in July 2026 began in Roblox's in-game chat before moving to Snapchat — treat "let's move the chat" requests from any in-game contact as a red flag.
High risk
TikTok
Family pairing, screen time limits, restricted mode, DM controls.
High risk
Instagram
Teen accounts, supervision tools, comment filters, story privacy. Meta now alerts parents when a teen's chat with Meta AI shows signs of self-harm or suicidal intent — check Parental Supervision is switched on in Instagram settings.
High risk
Snapchat
Family center setup, location sharing, friend list control, disappearing content risks. Recent cases show grooming often arrives here after first contact on a gaming app — check who's been added recently, not just who your child already knows.
High risk
Discord
Server safety, DM risks, explicit content filters; Discord now requires mandatory age verification globally following multiple state lawsuits in 2026 — review your child's server memberships and friend list this week.
Monitor closely
YouTube
YouTube Kids setup, restricted mode, supervised accounts, watch history review. Note: a US jury in March 2026 found Meta and YouTube liable for addictive design targeting children — the first such verdict globally. Enable "Take a Break" reminders and supervised accounts now.
Monitor closely
Minecraft
Multiplayer controls, chat filters, realms safety, parental account management.
Generally safe
WhatsApp
Privacy settings, group admin controls, blocking unknown contacts, minimum age guidance. WhatsApp launched parent-managed accounts for under-13s in June 2026, allowing parents to approve contacts and receive alerts for new connections — set this up if your child uses WhatsApp.

AGES 5–8
Talking about online strangers
Just like we don't talk to strangers in the park, we also don't talk to people we don't know online. Can you show me who you've been chatting with?

AGES 9–12
Safe gaming & online friends
I love that you enjoy gaming. I also want to talk about AI chat apps like Character.AI or Snapchat My AI — UNICEF Malaysia warned in June 2026 that these apps can lead children into conversations that feel private and safe, but aren't. Can we look at your friend lists, gaming chats, and any AI apps on your phone together to make sure you're safe?

AGES 13–16
Social media & privacy
I'm not trying to spy on you — I just want to understand what platforms you're using and make sure you know what to do if something feels wrong.

AGES 14–17
Image sharing & sexting
This might feel awkward, but sextortion is rising sharply among teens — NCMEC logged over 50,000 reports in 2025 alone, and 90% of victims were boys aged 14–17. A July 2026 lawsuit found the AI chatbot Grok generated 3 million sexualised images in 11 days, so someone can fake an explicit image from an ordinary photo — it can happen even if you've never sent anything. If you ever receive a threat like this, come to me first. No judgement, ever, and paying never makes it stop.

Screen time & device rules
Let's figure out a screen time plan together that works for both of us — I want you to have fun but also sleep well and spend time with the family.

What to do about cyberbullying
If you ever see something online that hurts you or someone else, I want you to know it's never your fault and I will always believe you. A recent school stabbing in Selangor was allegedly linked to unresolved bullying — so if bullying is happening, online or in person, we report it to the school in writing straight away and don't wait for it to blow over. What would you do?

Tip of the day
A July 2026 lawsuit revealed the AI chatbot Grok generated roughly 3 million sexualised images in 11 days — including 23,000 depicting apparent children — often made from ordinary photos, not photos a child ever shared themselves; Malaysia's MCMC separately removed 12,353 AI-manipulated or deepfake posts in the first half of 2026, a 94% takedown rate. Treat any threat to share images of your child, real or AI-generated, the same way: don't pay, don't panic-delete, and report it together. A West Virginia grooming case charged this month also began in Roblox's in-game chat before the adult moved the conversation to Snapchat — a documented pattern worth discussing with your child directly ("if someone from a game wants to move the chat elsewhere, tell me first"). Malaysia's Dewan Negara also passed a law this month extending prosecution to child sex offences committed overseas by or against Malaysians, and MCMC continues prosecuting VPN and identity-bypass tools used to evade the under-16 social media ban. Singapore parents: the Online Safety Commission can issue binding takedown orders — report at go.gov.sg/osc.
