Sextortion scams targeting teens
1 in 5 teens aged 13–20 has experienced sextortion, and 1 in 7 victims self-harmed as a result (Thorn, 2025). New Thorn/USF research flags financial sextortion increasingly targeting teen boys, and US police (Amarillo, Sept 2026) are warning of rising local cases. NCMEC received 50,000+ financial sextortion reports in 2025 (137 a day, up from 36,000+ in 2024). The UK's Report Remove service logged 394 reports from under-18s, up 34%, 98% involving boys aged 14–17.
Fentanyl-laced substances near schools
With the 2026–27 school year now underway, DEA field offices continue pushing fentanyl-awareness campaigns for parents and teachers; 52% of US schools now teach it, and more campuses stock naloxone (Narcan) on site.
Dangerous viral challenges

A Melaka man was arrested July 12 for allegedly abusing 10 boys at a playground and surau after months of in-person grooming. Online contact can escalate fast — teach kids no adult is entitled to touch them.
Cyberbullying via gaming platforms
Roughly three-quarters of teen social media users say harassment is a problem for people their age (Pew, 2026). Indonesia permanently blocked under-16s from Roblox in 2026 over cyberbullying concerns; 20% of players say they've spent less on games due to harassment.
Youth anxiety & academic stress
New PISA 2025 results: 5% of Malaysian 15-year-olds report cyberbullying versus a 3% OECD average, across 7,624 students in 157 schools, linked to lower wellbeing and academic outcomes. Heavy social media use is separately associated with a 2× anxiety risk.
AI deepfakes targeting children
UNICEF/ECPAT/INTERPOL: at least 1.2 million children across 11 countries have had explicit deepfakes made of them, and Thorn (May 2026) found 1 in 8 young people aged 13–20 know someone targeted. The Thorn finds 1 in 8 young people know a deepfake victim; a US lawsuit separately alleges xAI's Grok generated sexualized images of teens.
School bullying — new local data
A Kuala Pilah school hostel death is now a murder probe — police say a senior student was "punishing" a junior over rule-breaking, days after a similar hostel beating in Rompin. SUHAKAM continues calling for stronger safeguards; the Anti-Bullying Tribunal Act 2026 gives parents a reporting pathway separate from a police report.
Unregulated AI chatbots & minors
California's newly signed "Adam's Law" (SB 1119) will require AI companion chatbots to run suicide-risk crisis protocols and offer parental controls — a sign of where global standards are heading. A Common Sense Media Youth AI Safety Institute assessment separately found Google's AI Search poses an "unacceptable risk" to kids, and 44% of teens have seen AI-generated sexual content.
Screen time & digital addiction
