Sextortion scams targeting teens
1 in 5 teens aged 13–20 has experienced sextortion, and 1 in 7 victims self-harmed as a result (Thorn, 2025). NCMEC logged 50,000+ financial sextortion reports in 2025 — 137 a day, nearly double 2024. The UK's Report Remove service logged a 23% rise in claims last year, 98% involving boys aged 14–17.

Risky trends spreading via TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. The Benadryl challenge has killed at least 4 more teens since May 2026; NeeDoh microwave burns have injured children across five US states, including a Cleveland 10-year-old with second-degree burns. Stunt-related ER visits are up 18%.
Stranger approaches near schools
A Melaka man was arrested July 12 for allegedly abusing 10 boys at a playground and surau after months of in-person grooming. Online contact can escalate fast — teach kids no adult is entitled to touch them.
Cyberbullying via gaming platforms
Targeted harassment through in-game chat on Roblox, Fortnite, and others. Lifetime victimization among US gamers has risen from about a third in 2016 to over half in 2025; 1 in 5 players say they've spent less on games due to harassment. Coordinated "report and ban" campaigns and gamertag doxxing are rising tactics.
Youth anxiety & academic stress
1 in 4 teens report high anxiety linked to social media use. Girls aged 11–15 face the strongest documented impact; heavy social media use is associated with a 2× anxiety risk (2026).
AI deepfakes targeting children
AI tools can generate fake intimate images of children from a single ordinary photo. IWF logged a 26,362% year-over-year rise in such videos in 2025. xAI is now suing a South Carolina man accused of using Grok to generate 7,000+ deepfake abuse images of his stepdaughter, part of a class action alleging Grok produced 23,000+ apparent-child images in just 11 days. On July 16, San Francisco's city attorney ordered Apple and Google to remove 13 face-swap apps capable of producing sexual deepfakes.
School bullying — new local data
Long-term bullying linked to depression, anxiety, and school refusal. A Selangor Form 3 student was stabbed 10+ times by a schoolmate on July 6 in a case police say was bullying-fuelled revenge. Report bullying to the school in writing — don't wait for it to escalate.
Unregulated AI chatbots & minors
Children forming emotional attachments to AI apps with little safeguarding. A Common Sense Media Youth AI Safety Institute assessment found Google's AI Search poses an "unacceptable risk" to kids, missing crisis signs and giving inconsistent answers across 2,600+ test searches. 44% of teens have seen AI-generated sexual content, and nearly 1 in 5 say they've made such content or know someone who has.
